Interviewer: Welcome back to "Icons Unscripted," where we sit down with the people who have shaped culture and left an indelible mark. Today, we have a guest who has done just that, with a career that spanned a decade and culminated in an unprecedented list of awards and honors. She's a performer, a director, and a business owner. Please welcome the one and only, Jenna Haze!

(Jenna walks out to a standing ovation. She looks relaxed and confident, a testament to her second act in life. She takes a seat, her famous smile as bright as ever.)

Jenna Haze: Wow, thank you. It's truly a pleasure to be here. And "unscripted" is a word I can definitely relate to—my life has certainly been that!

Interviewer: (Laughs) I can only imagine. Let's start with your incredible career. You entered the industry in 2001 and went on to win every major award, including the prestigious AVN "Female Performer of the Year" in 2009. What was the secret to that level of success?

Jenna Haze: You know, I think it was about more than just the scenes. It was about being a professional. I treated it like a job, because it was. I was always on time, I knew my lines—or at least the gist of them!—and I worked to have good chemistry with my co-stars. But I also think I was authentic. I was a bit of a tomboy from Orange County, and I didn't try to be something I wasn't. People responded to that. They saw a real person who was passionate about what she was doing.

Interviewer: Your career also had a fascinating phase where you performed exclusively with women for several years. What was the story behind that?

Jenna Haze: (Nods) That was an interesting time. I was in a relationship with a cameraman in the industry, and out of respect for him, I made the decision to only work with women. It was a choice I made for myself and for my relationship, and it was a period of great growth for me creatively. I learned to focus on different types of storytelling and performance. I think it made me a better performer overall.

Interviewer: You retired from performing in 2012, a decision that shocked many fans. What led you to step away from the spotlight?

Jenna Haze: It was a really tough decision, but it was time. The industry was changing, and with the rise of the internet, my work was being pirated and given away for free. It was disheartening to see so much hard work just stolen. I also knew that I had achieved everything I set out to. I had won the awards, I had a name, and I had built a legacy. I felt like it was time to close that chapter and start a new one, this time from behind the camera.

Interviewer: And that's exactly what you did, launching your own production company, Jennaration X Studios. What has it been like to go from performer to director?

Jenna Haze: It's been incredibly fulfilling. As a performer, you're a part of the puzzle. As a director, you're putting the whole puzzle together. I love being able to help new talent find their voice and to create films that are just as high-quality and creative as the ones I starred in. It's a completely different kind of challenge, but it uses a lot of the same skills—creativity, communication, and a clear vision.

Interviewer: You've also had some fun mainstream appearances, including a brief but memorable cameo in the film Superbad. What was that experience like, working on a major Hollywood set?

Jenna Haze: Oh, it was hilarious! They were so professional and so kind. It was cool to be on a set of that scale and see how everything works. I think my line was something like, "Can I get some more Vaseline?" which, you know, is a sentence I never thought I'd be saying on a Hollywood set. (Laughs) It was a fun little wink to my other career, and a great way to show people that I'm more than just one thing.

Interviewer: What's next for Jenna Haze? What can we expect from you in the future?

Jenna Haze: I'm really excited about where Jennaration X is headed. We're continuing to push boundaries and create great content. But more than that, I'm focused on living my life on my own terms. I came from a small, conservative town and I worked my way to a career that was entirely my own. I hope my story can be an inspiration to anyone who feels like they're on a path they didn't choose. You have the power to write your own story.

Interviewer: Jenna Haze, it has been an absolute pleasure. Thank you for your honesty and your time.

Jenna Haze: Thank you! It was a blast.
