I think we all know about this force, this force resist any motion. When two objects one in motion and another in rest or have different velocity or moving opposite to the first object then there will be a force generate which will directly proportional to the motion of the objects ( when both objects are moving in opposite direction to each other ).
This force is cause due to the microscopical structure of the particles. For example- If you take a plane paper, you will find that its surface is very smooth. But when you observe it under microscope then you will find there is a huge number of projection are present on the surface of the paper. These projections are present on the surface every solid object, its number, shape and size may be differ according to the object. These projections interlock with the projections of another object when both come in contact with each other. This is same as the gears of your vehicle.
To find the friction between paper just do this experiment.
- Take two books
- Interlock each pages of the both books with each other.
- Now try to separate both books without opening the pages.
- Yes, it is impossible to separate those books with hand.
Not only in solid but this force also generates in liquid as well as gas. But in comparison to solid it creates less amount of force.
Role of friction
The role of friction is to give a stable world. Without friction we can't find anything in this world in rest. Suppose you have thrown a ball with keeping its contact with the Earth's surface ( suppose there is no friction ) then it will never stop.
We can't imagine this world without friction. But I will try to think.
Things which will happen if there is no friction between any object on the Earth.
- You can't able to walk because your feet can't able to exerts force on the ground then there will no any opposite force from the ground.
- In the same way your car also can't able to move.
- You can't able write.
- You can't able to stop your car once it start moving.
- And even more
If friction is necessary then how can we say that it is a demon.
So, the fact is this- when you fall from your bike accidentally you will got several injuries which is cause due to the friction between your skin and the road. And as the road is solid so it have more intermolecular force in comparison to your skin. Not only in this way you got injuries due to friction almost 100% of our skin injury is cause due to friction.
Friction is also responsible for the wastage of the energy. How?
- As we can't able to stop friction between objects, so even if we want to stop it we can't. If we want to move then friction must oppose our force in case of that we have to use our energy continuously. But we can reduce friction in our vehicle by using lubricants.
So we have observed some good things and some bad things about the friction and after all we can say that without friction we can't survive at all. So friction is a demon but it is also necessary for our survival.
